Get cuts done at the store
Home Depot, Lowe’s, and most local lumber yards will cut to size for free or a small fee. Bring a sketch with dimensions.
- 02
Plant stand
Two 12" squares + four 18" legs. Glue and clamp, screw a triangular shelf brace under the top. Done in an evening.
- 03
Pre-cut bookshelf
Two 6 ft sides + 4 shelves. Pocket screws hide the joinery. No saw cuts at home — just assembly.
- 04
Coffee table
Pre-cut 4 legs and a tabletop. Pocket-screw legs to corner blocks under the top. Stainable in an afternoon.
- 05
Finish indoors safely
Use water-based finishes or hard wax oil — both are low-VOC. Open a window, lay down a drop cloth, work in batches.
Mistakes to avoid
- Trying to make complex cuts with a hand saw at home — slow and messy
- Using oil-based stains indoors — fumes for days
- Skipping the glue and relying on screws alone — joints loosen fast
If you can’t drill, cut, or paint…
- Pre-fab “build kits” from companies like Cooper Co or Vermont Workshop
- IKEA hacks — start with a base and modify rather than build from raw lumber
- Rent a Saw Stop for a weekend at a local makerspace if you need real cuts
Shopping list
- Pull saw (Suizan brand is great)

- Wood glue (Titebond II)
- Kreg pocket-hole jig (mini)
