How to hang a heavy mirror so it actually stays up

A 30 lb mirror falling off a wall is a very bad day. Here’s how to hang anything from 10 lb to 75 lb the right way — including the option that needs zero studs.

Step by step

  1. 01

    Weigh the mirror

Stand on a bathroom scale with and without it — the difference is your weight to hang. Don’t guess. Mirrors are dense.

  2. 02

    Pick the right anchor

Under 20 lb: any picture hook into drywall is fine. 20–50 lb: needs a stud OR a heavy-duty toggle. Over 50 lb: must be a stud, two anchor points minimum.

  3. 03

Find the studs (or commit to toggles)

Studs are 16 or 24 inches apart. A magnet stud finder will catch the screws holding drywall. If no stud lines up where you want the mirror, plan on toggles.

  4. 04

    Mark the exact position

Measure the distance from the top of the mirror to where the wire pulls taut, or to the D-rings. Subtract that from where you want the top edge. Mark with a pencil. Use a level.

  5. 05

    Drill and install the anchors

For toggles: drill a hole the width specified on the package — usually 1/2". Squeeze the toggle, push through, tighten until snug, then back off a half-turn so the head sits flush.

  6. 06

    Hang and check

Hang the mirror, step back, level it. Push gently — if there’s any give or creak, take it down and reassess the anchor.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using the hooks that came in the mirror packaging — those are almost always rated for picture frames, not mirrors
  • Drilling into the seam of the drywall — there’s no grip there
  • Skipping the second anchor point on wide mirrors — they pivot and pull free over time

If you can’t drill, cut, or paint…

  • Lean a tall mirror against the wall — zero anchors needed, very on-trend
  • Use heavy-duty mirror-mount adhesive strips for mirrors under 25 lb on flat painted drywall
  • Mount to a French cleat for very heavy or oversized mirrors
