Tools you’ll need

  • — Sharp utility knife
  • — Straight edge
  • — Squeegee or credit card
  • — Tape measure

Materials

  • Peel-and-stick tile sheets
    ~10 sq ft
  • Painter’s tape
    1 roll

Step by step

  1. 01

Clean and dry the wall thoroughly

Grease is the enemy. Degreaser, then water, then dry fully. Wait 24 hours after washing.

  2. 02

    Dry-lay your sheets

Lay them out on the floor to plan the pattern. Mark the back of each with a number so they go up in order.

  3. 03

    Apply from one corner outward

Peel a few inches at a time, stick top edge first, smooth down with a squeegee to push out bubbles.

  4. 04

    Trim around outlets

Sharp utility knife, fresh blade. Press the tile down around the outlet box, then trace and cut.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Applying over wallpaper — both will peel off when removed
  • Skipping the dry-lay and ending up with a mismatched pattern at the corners
  • Trying to remove and reapply more than twice — adhesive weakens fast

If you can’t drill, cut, or paint…

  • Removable wallpaper for a smoother look
  • Magnetic stainless sheet for behind the stove only
  • Fabric panels in a frame for an industrial-rental loft look
